Sleepy Bees

Carpenter Bees get very sleepy in the fall

The garden is full of blossoms with tired bees, 

just sitting there, sometimes for minutes, sometimes hours,

with only the smallest occasional movements

Sometimes sideways,

sometimes nose-first,

Or upside down,

Or two-for-one.

And some don't quite make it home for bed.

Also this post would not be complete without this amazing

richly hued calendula blossom, 

complete with beneficial wasp and a chicken feather- Primrose I think.

Oddly it never quite opened, just stayed like this as long as it lasted.

But still a unique color, most are yellow to white here.

Autumn Showing Up

I am sure no one would want to miss another one of these photo ops,

on my bedroom window this time.

Sussex chickies Miss Marple, Poirot, and Jefferson,

Somehow that sounds really dramatic in my head.

I am afraid there is no hope for you.

Actually it most definitely didn't start playing in my head when I saw it, 

but after uploading the pictures here- 

I am suddenly seeing giant books opening.

So there ya have it.

 Now I have moved on to the library card song.

So basically I am officially hopeless.

Blooms are pretty big once fully open, with a nice cheery center!

Spides and Skies

Indoor Fishing spider, without good lighting in basement-

the flash makes her darker, but she was really dark in person, too, very beautiful.

Not full grown, though, so maybe she will get lighter.

Outdoor spider, without good lighting in evening-

Not sure what kind, maybe a type of Orb Weaver.

There were also some mating grasshoppers by the dryer vent as I was cleaning it out, but lucky you, no camera. There was a lot happening back there behind all the zinnias and marigolds. No snakes, though. The chickens have really cut down on incidental snake sightings around the house- they eat the smallish ones, and aren't terribly polite to the older ones. There is a Copperhead around that side of the house, though, and a mammoth Rat Snake, both of which are pretty chicken-proof now.
